Certified Soil Testing for Septic Systems
Accurate. Reliable. Code compliant.
Before installing a septic system, your property must be properly evaluated. Soil testing is the first and most important step in determining what type of system can be installed and whether your land meets county and state requirements.

Young’s Plumbing provides certified soil testing services for homeowners throughout Gleason, Merrill, Tomahawk, Rhinelander, Antigo, and surrounding areas.

Why Soil Testing Is Required
Septic systems rely on the natural filtering ability of soil to safely treat wastewater. Not all soil drains the same way, and the wrong conditions can lead to system failure or groundwater contamination.

A certified soil test determines:
• How quickly water moves through the soil
• Depth to seasonal wetness or groundwater
• Depth to bedrock or restrictive layers
• Soil texture such as sand, silt, or clay
• Overall suitability for a conventional or mound system

These findings determine whether your property qualifies for a conventional septic system, requires a mound system, or may need a holding tank.
What to Expect During a Soil Test
The process starts with a site evaluation. We review:

• Property layout and topography
• Drainage patterns
• Nearby wells, wetlands, or surface water
• Potential locations for the septic system and drain field

Test pits are then excavated, typically three or more, and dug approximately four to ten feet deep. These pits allow us to examine the different soil layers and identify key characteristics such as soil structure, color changes, and signs of seasonal wetness or groundwater

After the Testing
Once fieldwork is complete, you will receive a detailed soil report that includes:

• Soil classification and profile description
• Depth to groundwater and/or restrictive layers if present
• Drain field recommendation
• Site suitability determination

Upon completion, this report will be submitted to your local county office. It can also be included as part of your septic system permit application if you are ready to proceed with permitting.
Who Needs Soil Testing?
Soil testing is required for:

• New home construction
• Septic system replacements
• Property purchases where future building is planned
• Land development projects

If you are building on undeveloped land in Gleason, Merrill, Tomahawk, Rhinelander, Antigo, or nearby areas, soil testing is your first step.
