Young’s Plumbing specializes in Private Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems, commonly known as septic systems. We design and install septic systems for homeowners throughout Gleason, Merrill, Tomahawk, Rhinelander, Antigo, and nearby areas.
If your property does not have access to municipal sewer, a properly designed septic system is essential. We guide you through the entire process from soil testing and design to permits and installation.

How the Process Works
Every property is different. The type of septic system you need depends on your soil conditions, home size, and local regulations.
Here is how we get started:
• Certified soil testing is completed to evaluate onsite conditions
• A system is designed based on soil type, number of bedrooms, and code requirements
• County and state permits are filed and approved
• Installation begins once permits and site conditions allow
Our certified soil tester, Danielle Young, ensures every system is evaluated and designed to meet all county and state requirements.
Types of Septic Systems We Install

Conventional Septic Systems
A conventional septic system is the most common option when soil conditions allow.
How it works:
Wastewater flows from your home into a septic tank
Solids settle in the tank while liquid effluent flows to a drain field
The soil naturally filters and treats the wastewater
Soil permeability is critical. If the soil drains too fast or too slow, a conventional system may not be approved. That is why proper soil testing is required before installation.
Conventional systems are reliable, cost effective, and long lasting when installed correctly and maintained properly.

Mound Septic Systems
A mound system is used when soil conditions, high groundwater, or shallow bedrock prevent a traditional drain field from working safely.
Instead of placing the drain field below ground, a mound system is built above grade using layers of sand to properly filter wasterwate
How it works:
Wastewater flows into a septic tank
Effluent moves into a pump chamber
The pump distributes wastewater evenly across the raised mound
An approved mound sand bed filters and treats the effluent before it enters the natural ground
Mound systems are more complex but provide a safe, code compliant solution for challenging properties.

Holding Tanks
A holding tank is a watertight tank that stores wastewater until it is pumped and hauled away.
Holding tanks are typically used when:
-Soil conditions will not support a conventional or mound system
-Environmental or zoning restrictions limit other options
Homeowners must monitor water usage carefully, as holding tanks require regular pumping. While the upfront cost may be lower, long term pumping expenses should be considered.

Septic System Maintenance
Proper maintenance protects your investment and helps prevent costly repairs.
General guidelines:
-Pump your septic tank every three years as required by your county
-Avoid flushing wipes, grease, or non biodegradable materials
-Use water efficiently to prevent system overload
-Keep heavy equipment and vehicles off drain fields and mounds
-During the winter months, avoid driving over or removing snow from the drain field or mound to minimize the risk of freeze-ups.
-It is recommended that mounds are flushed out once a year
Routine maintenance extends the life of your system and helps it perform properly for years to come.
